What Is Personal Data and How to Protect It?

When you log into a game account, you enter personal information. When you sign up for a new social network, you enter personal information. When you make an online purchase, you enter personal information. Our personal information is the key to all the benefits of the Internet, and we have to share it. We do it lightly, not always thinking about the consequences. So, let's look at why it is important not to lose control of your data.

What Is Personal Data?

Personal data is not just a set of numbers and letters, it is the digital footprint we leave behind in the online world. Simply put, it's any information about us, from our favorite books to our bank accounts. So, in most cases when we say “personal data”, we mean personal details as follows.

  • First and Last Name. The information we are most likely to share. It can be used for a variety of purposes, but access to it is not very dangerous.
  • Home Address and Current Location. This information can be used by strangers as well as friends.
  • Contact Information. A telephone number or email are the main means of communication. This information is enough for online fraudsters to launch an attack.
  • Bank Details: bank card numbers, CCV codes, passwords for banking applications - the data that cybercriminals most want to get their hands on.

How to Protect Personal Data?

First of all, you should realize that we use personal data for almost everything online. If we clearly understand which type of information is safe to fill in about ourselves and where, then we are in control of the situation.

  • Knowledge Is Power

Now you know what personal data is and why it's important to protect it. Now it's time to tell your children or elderly parents about it. Be prepared to give reasons and examples.

  • Complex Passwords

123456? Scammers will thank you for a password like that. It's important to understand that a complex password is there not to make it easier to log into your account, but to protect it. Make your passwords different and use a combination of letters, numbers and symbols - at least for accounts that contain personal information.

  • It Is Personal

We're used to sharing personal life on social media, but you should keep personal data private from your followers. Online scammers are good at persuasion and manipulation, and at first they may seem harmless, so it's important to control access to your information and only share it with people you really trust. Better still, keep it to yourself only.

  • Virus Protection

Must be considered at all times of the year. Find and pay for a good antivirus program and regard it as insurance for your digital self. It will help prevent attacks and protect your personal data from malware.

Why It Matters?

If the information above doesn't convince you, let the numbers speak for themselves.

  • Research shows that teenagers often share their passwords with friends as a sign of trust and intimacy. While this is a nice gesture, it is also a threat to your privacy. A friend can be hacked, a friend can find out more than they should, and a friend can end up fighting with a friend. Cyberbullying and distribution of another’s personal information might be a consequence of friendly password sharing. It's better to show trust in other ways.

Protection = Care?

These are just the basics, but they are crucial to set up a safe online space. Educating yourself and others, taking wise online precautions, using modern security technologies – in the digital age, taking care of yourself starts with protecting your data. Take this seriously, because today we spend almost more time online than we do in real life.
