How to Prevent Bullying in the Classroom?

The best way to combat bullying is to prevent it, which means creating a safe environment for children both inside and outside of school. Only adults can make children feel safe and comfortable, that is why we have created an Anti-Bullying Program which is easy to implement in any school or another educational institution willing to address bullying and help its students develop soft skills.

Where to Start?

Before you get started, study the Program and suggest implementing it in your school. You are going to find all implementation instructions needed in the Introductory Section of the Program.

Step 1. Take the preparatory courses. They are already included in the Program:

Step 2. Agree upon and establish a whole-school set of rules supporting anti-bullying policy.

Step 3. Start implementing the Program in your classroom. Based on our methodology, plan classroom sessions dedicated to raising anti-bullying awareness and soft skills development. Hold these sessions regularly.

Step 4. Organize an Anti-Bullying Marathon. This can either be the current school year’s Program high point or a separate Anti-Bullying Event.

If Bullying Has Already Occurred in the Classroom

Step 1. Reveal the problem to your pupils. For example, you may say: "We seem to have bullying incidents in our class" or "Our class has a big problem with communication".

Step 2. Show that bullying is not a problem for one person, but for the whole class. Use a video from Travly NET (NO to Bulling) or examples from cartoons, films or books to illustrate this.

Step 3. Guide students and help them draw their own conclusions that bullying is unacceptable. For example, using the game What is Your Contribution to Bullying?

Step 4. Together with the children, make up classroom behavior rules, write them down and put them in a place where they are easy to see for everyone. For example, "We don't settle disputes with our fists" or " We address each other by name".

Step 5. Don't forget to support positive change with your pupils. Agree on joint rituals. For example, you could put green pebbles in one jar when the rules are followed and red pebbles in another jar when they are broken, and summarize the results each week. You could set up an anonymous post box in the classroom and collect notes about rules being followed or broken.

Step 6. Spend time improving flexible skills. Explain to pupils why it is important to communicate respectfully, how to understand and protect their boundaries, etc.

Step 7. Doing something together can help to unite the class and harmonize the hierarchy in the classroom. It is important not just to have fun, but to demonstrate to all pupils that:

Anyone can be a leader,
There are no fixed roles or hierarchies in the classroom, and that
Teamwork is great!
