What Is Malware and How to Protect Your Devices and Nerves from It?

Hello, you're online. That means you've seen security alerts, heard about viruses, and probably even encountered them. But what is malware?

Malware is a term used for any program or code that threatens the security of data on your device or
can cause damage to the system. Malware tries to disrupt or even take control of your system.

You can come across malware almost anywhere. But is it possible to protect yourself and your gadget from it? Yes, if you follow the basic rules of online security. The first step is to be able to identify the enemy.

Malware Types

There are different malware types, which differ in the way they spread and behave. To defeat it, you need to understand how it works.

Viruses. Embed themselves unnoticeably in other programs and, when running on the device, begin to affect system files, modify them and reproduce themselves.

Worms. These snake-like programs spread across the network and also tend to copy themselves. They can delete or damage files.

Trojan Horses. One of the most dangerous types of malware. Disguised as useful programs, they get onto the device and open access to the system for intruders. Can weaken the system to allow access for other malicious programs.

Spyware. Slowly infiltrates the device and stores information about the user: personal data, history of website visits, information about online habits.

Adware. Intrusive programs that can infiltrate a device and bombard the user with unwanted advertisements.

Malware Habitats

We know what malware is and how it works. Let's find out where it can be found.

Email. We send emails without any great precautions, which means criminals may rather easily get hold of them. Thus, we may start receiving emails with suspicious links and infected attachments.

Questionable Websites. Sometimes it is enough just to visit an unverified website to get your gadget infected with a strange virus.

Infected Files. By installing pirated software, testing demo versions of programs and games, and downloading suspicious files, we give attackers access to our devices.

Malware Protection Methods

Antivirus Software. These can be used to find and remove infected files on your device. They also block malware when it is downloaded and warn you about potential threats.

Regular Updates. Older versions of programs can be more vulnerable to threats, so timely updates are important.

Online Hygiene. Don't visit sites you don't trust and be careful. Even if you're sure the site is official, check the address. An unnoticeable error in the address can lead to a fraudulent site. Don't download files from unverified locations, nor open strange links, or click on suspicious banner ads.

What to Do if My Gadget Has Been Infected?

  • First, disconnect your device from the Internet to prevent the virus from spreading.
  • Then use an antivirus program to detect and remove the malware
  • After treatment, take security measures to prevent reinfection.

The consequences of malware infecting your device are unpredictable but always unpleasant. Some programs can delete your digital memories, such as photos, or documents, any file at all. Others may track your digital footprint. Still others are used by attackers to steal your personal or financial information, and sometimes this can become a real problem.

That doesn't mean you have to be afraid of every website in the world and disconnect from the Internet forever! It's just a matter of following some basic security rules and getting to know how to use antivirus software.
