Staying safe and healthy online: Cyber Hygiene & screen time tips for Kids

The internet is a wonderful place to learn, play, and connect with friends. But just like washing your hands keeps you healthy in real life, practicing cyber hygiene keeps you safe online. And just like too much candy isn’t good for you, too much screen time can also affect your health. Here are some tips every kid should know.

Cyber Hygiene: Protecting yourself online

  • Keep your passwords secret
  1. Choose a password that is hard to guess (mix letters, numbers, symbols).
  2.  Never share it with friends — only parents or guardians if needed.
  • Think before you click
  1. Don’t open links, pop-ups, or messages from strangers.
  2. If something looks strange or scary, ask an adult for help.
  • Be kind online
  1. Use the internet to share positive words, not to hurt others.
  2. Remember: once something is posted, it’s hard to erase.
  • Protect your personal information

  1. Don’t share your home address, school name, or phone number publicly.
  2. Use nicknames in games instead of your real name.

Screen time: finding the right balance

Follow the “20–20–20 rule”
  • Every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds. This rests your eyes.
Make time for real-life fun
  • Play outside, read a book, or do something creative away from screens.
Set daily limits
  • Work with parents to decide how much time you can spend online.
  •  Use timers or alarms to remind you when it’s time to stop.
Screens off before bed
  • Turn off tablets, phones, or TV at least 1 hour before sleeping.
  • This helps your brain relax and improves sleep.
Being smart online means protecting yourself and using technology in a healthy way. With good cyber hygiene and balanced screen time, you can enjoy the internet safely while growing strong, creative, and happy in real life too!
